yeah not clutch release bearing (can we confirm thats the throwout bearing , thrust bearing, heard so many people call it different things) if it goes away when you push the clutch in, i made this mistake.. i think its the shaft bearing after a bit of research. hope it doesnt get worse by the time i have to take the gearbox out again though.. such a pain in the ass job

Hi Sadlotus, if you have assembled the throwout (thrust) bearing properly and with the correct, or any, clearance at the adjuster, the bearing is NOT turning when your foot is off the pedal. Hence it cannot make any noise. However the input shaft/gear and the layshaft gear are turning and may be noisy.

very noisy thrust bearing. by asb1281 on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 5:46 +0000 . Mine has done done 42000k's and took it to the dealer for clutch bearing noise, clutch shudder and 5th gear whine. They put a new clutch in and after stripping the box down they found the gearbox mainshaft had a lot of wear, so they put a new gearbox in too. Hope this one
